Our dinner at Nobu was the first time I’d witnessed a group of friends share a single dining experience and at the end of the night have each of them walk away with opposing opinions on the food, service and likelihood to return. Our group of eight were evenly split into two schools of thought, Team “Yay Nobu!” and Team “No thank you”.
I couldn’t understand how I could have liked almost every dish whilst my friend, who was sitting right next to me, was less than thrilled.
The more I thought about it the more I realised there was a formula for making the most of a group meal at Nobu.
Guideline 1: Be prepared to share
The a la carte menu is designed for “family banquet” style eating, all food into the middle of the table and take your pick.
Guideline 2: Research the dishes before you go
While you expect every dish to be exquisite at a restaurant with Nobu’s reputation, doing some homework beforehand (thank you TFP), really helped me to order the best on offer.
For what it’s worth I loved the yellow tail sashimi, the miso black cod, and the lychee panna cotta. Also, I could eat the tuna tacos every day for the rest of my life and not get sick of them.
Guideline 3: If you have special dietary needs pay extra special attention to Guideline 1
If you have food allergies then I know you already do your homework prior to heading out for dinner, but sharing of dishes is not something you would normally do. The downfall of not being able to share at Nobu is that you could be stuck eating a shitake salad, which is great at first, but can quickly get tiresome if you’re eating an entire serve. You may also find yourself in a position where everyone else is eating except for you, as dishes are being served mostly in the order they were written down rather than by course.
