Getting swept up in the London 2012 Olympic spirit I decided there would be nothing more appropriate than to treat myself to high tea at Rochelle Adonis.

When I rang to book a spot at one of the communal tables a few days earlier, the person taking the booking had to double check that I was indeed reserving a space for one.

While some people may fear dining alone (or doing anything alone for that matter), I have always been ok with my own company. The team at Rochelle Adonis however went the extra step to make me feel welcome as a solo patron and I was incredibly touched to see, next to my place setting, they had supplied me with a few magazines so I had something to read. This was the first time I had ever felt like an invited guest rather than a customer in a Perth cafe.

The high tea menu on my visit included

A choice of 8 teas or a french press coffee

Savoury Course
Yorkshire pudding wih beef
Pea and ham soup
Greek salad cone with tomato sorbet
Parmesan crisp with celeriac remoulade
Cucumber sandwich

Palette Cleanser
Strawberry and rhubarb ice

Dessert Course
Peanut butter cookie with salted caramel ice cream sandwich
Pear galette with salted caramel sauce
Black Forest pudding
Brioche pain-perdu with rhubarb and rose petals (pictured above)

The absolute highlight of the menu for me was the pea and ham soup.  The ham foam on top made the soup so light and airy, and the entire soup had so much flavour I was sad to see my shot glass empty. I loved this soup so much that I was looking around to see if there was a lunch menu where the soup would be it’s star, alas they don’t serve lunch.

As for the desserts, my favourite would have to be the pear galette. While the peanut butter cookie was extremely delicious, the pear galette is exactly what my taste buds were after on a winter’s day.
